Programs
Beyond the Policy Tracker and the Mobilization Network, HealthBegins runs programs that build the strategy, skills, and infrastructure for collective action on health equity.
Program
National Learning Action Network
Advancing health and democracy
The National Learning Action Network (LAN) is a national infrastructure for capacity building and advocacy that helps health professionals and place-based collaboratives advance health and the drivers of health. Using the HealthBegins Collaborative Action Framework, network members engage in skill-building opportunities and shared institutional strategies to build solidarity, address shared policy challenges, and strengthen collective action.
Shared outcomes
Health sector as an anchor for community engagement
Demonstrate how health organizations, rooted in trust within their communities, can anchor local action and civic capacity building work.
Local leadership and collective action
Equip participating organizations with the knowledge, relationships, and confidence to lead coordinated initiatives within their communities.
Narrative shift
Build evidence and stories that lift up the communities we serve, and equip the health sector to stand alongside them in strengthening action and policy work.
Sustainable movement infrastructure
Establish learning networks and relationships among cohort members that create lasting accountability structures beyond the initial grant period.

Program
Strategic Communications Resource Network
Funded by the California Wellness Foundation and the California Health Care Foundation
The Strategic Communications Resource Network (SCRN) is a communications and narrative-building resource for the Equity Innovators Partnership, a collective of California medical schools and allied organizations working to train a physician workforce that reflects and serves the state's communities, delivered with equal dignity and respect. Working with Partnership members who have taken up this work, SCRN provides the messaging tools, shared narrative strategy, and communications infrastructure that help the Partnership and a broader network of allied organizations advance that purpose.
Building a durable infrastructure for collective action
Connect and coordinate
Build durable cross-institutional infrastructure that enables medical education innovators to connect, coordinate, and activate rapidly.
Shift the narrative
Co-develop a statewide messaging framework, narrative campaign, and resources that shift public discourse around medical education.
Strengthen collective capacity
Equip network members with the skills and strategies needed to move from moral injury to agency for systems change.
Program
Academic partnerships
HealthBegins partners with colleges and universities to connect students and faculty to the work of the Health Equity Policy Hub. Together we aim to:
- Build a pipeline of students who understand policy and its impacts on health equity, as the health care leaders of tomorrow.
- Tell stories of impact to shape the narrative around health equity as a crucial part of a functioning, multi-racial democracy.
- Build a national health equity advocacy ecosystem by linking students, faculty, and partner organizations to work interdisciplinarily and drive coordinated action across university campuses.
